The term “ SSL” is short for Secure Sockets Layer but is more commonly referred to as SSL. An “SSL Certificate” is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information transmitted to a server using SSL encrypted technology. An SSL Certificate will have the certificate holders name, a certificate number and expiration date, a copy of the holder’s public key and a digital signature of the certificate issuing authority.
